Brief summary

Through cutting-edge sorting techniques and groundbreaking formulations from recycled plastics, RECIPLAST project is not just reducing waste – it's shaping a more sustainable future for plastic usage. In this article, you can discover the main aims of the project and its steps toword a better plastic packaging life- cycle.

Revolutionizing Plastic Sustainability

The RECIPLAST project aims to improve the environmental sustainability of plastic components used in the automotive and packaging sectors through the development of separation, recycling and valorization solutions for the post-consumer fractions and industrial waste that still present critical issues in their capacity to be recycled and reused.
New technical solutions will be developed based on existing technologies on the market, available to some of the partners involved in the project. These innovative methods will enable the sorting of fractions that have not previously been able to be separated, using thermo-mechanical and chemical processes, and improvements in separation quality, significantly reducing the number of non-reusable fractions.
After the development of these innovative separation processes, new formulations and materials will be developed from the recycled plastic, with the aim of replacing virgin polymers in those applications where the recycled material cannot be used due to its poor performance.

Plastics and environmental sustainability

The aims of RECIPLAST are:

1. Decrease the environmental impact of currently non-recyclable packaging (multi-material film, trays, etc.) through new mechanical and chemical recycling processes, such as:

  • combined thermal-mechanical recycling
  • PET chemical depolymerization and separation of other fractions.

2. Decrease the environmental impact of currently non-recyclable automotive end-of-life plastic components through new mechanical and chemical recycling processes, such as:

  • PU foams chemical recycling
  • Elastomers (sealings and tires) chemical recycling
  • Mechanical recycling of plastic components

3. Improve the target of reuse and recycle of end-of-life vehicles by designing recovery and recycle pathways for plastic components that currently go to landfill, starting from disassembly/shredding, through innovative recycling technologies. (Estimated target: -20% to landfill).

4. Development of new formulations using recycled plastics for the production of high-performance components.
